Taking a laptop apart is not for everyone, but it is sometimes the only way to fix an overheating laptop. If you want to look at other options, a cooling pad might be the way to go.
Question is are cooling pads bad for laptops? You are not solving the problem by using a laptop pad to cool down the laptop. Dust obstructs ventilation, causing an overheated laptop. As a result, the overflow that is supposed to cool down the components is ineffective. They aren’t bad in and of themselves, but they don’t solve the problem.
The issue with opening your laptop is:

The first port of call should be to use a vacuum or hoover and hold the nozzle against the ventilation of your laptop; this will remove some dust but not all; however, if you start this process early enough when the problem first appears, you will likely alleviate the problem and extend the time it takes for the laptop to experience issues due to overheating.
We don’t recommend using a compressed air cannister in the vent because it will simply blow the dust back into the laptop, causing an issue elsewhere.
Why are cooling pads bad for laptops?
Simply put, they are sticking plasters because they do not solve the problem.
Laptops are built with a cooling system that is optimized for the laptop’s purpose in terms of form factor and internal structure.
Because of the amount of work that the components must do in order to provide you with a good gaming experience, your gaming laptop will rely heavily on its cooling system.
Chips, such as the CPU, have a heat sink on top of them, which is topped with a blob of thermal paste to improve heat transfer away from the chip. The heat is then dissipated throughout the heat sink, and air is blown across it to allow it to cool. However, when a component uses electricity, it produces heat, which must be dealt with.
Other components lack a heat sink and rely solely on the fans to keep them cool.
However, the heat must be vented, and these can be found on the outside of your laptop.
So, bearing this in mind, here are some of the things that could go wrong:
The thermal paste can dry out, resulting in insufficient heat transfer away from the chip.
The symptom of this is that your laptop begins to lag or randomly restart, which is caused by the laptop attempting to self-preserve itself by restarting because it can no longer handle the workload.
Dust is made up of dead skin cells that have accumulated to form a powder. This dust is all around us, and it collects inside electronic devices (like your laptop).
If the fans are unable to vent the hot air outward, the hot air remains inside the laptop, causing the cooling system to work overtime and resulting in a noisy laptop.
The problem will not go away unless the dust that has clogged the ventilation is removed.
Blowing the dust back into the laptop will not solve the problem because the cooling system will still have to work hard to blow enough air across the components that are now covered in the dust.
Why are cooling pads good for laptops?
If your laptop overheats and the thermal paste dries up, it will cause serious damage to the internal components.
A cooling pad is a good alternative to disassembling the laptop.
A cooling pad can help a cooling system do its job if you use a vacuum regularly to remove dust from the vents. The result is a laptop that is now less noisy.
Which cooling pad should you buy?
Cooling pads perform the same function and do not have a significant price difference.
When a manufacturer adds extra features to a product, the price starts to fluctuate.
- A quieter fan
- Built in USB sockets
- LED’s for aesthetics
- Tilting mounts
- Digital temperature readouts
However, you must ensure that the cooling pad you purchase is the correct size for your laptop.
In the many years I’ve been repairing laptops, it’s usually either a gaming laptop that overheats and breaks down, or an older laptop that has been neglected.
For that reason I recommend this particular laptop cooling pad simply because it is appropriate for both scenarios.
If you have an older laptop that is overheating, you should have it serviced and the dust removed, but if you don’t, you’ll need some serious cooling, and our recommendation will work for both users of older laptops and gamers who are having issues with an overheating laptop.
Fix the problem of overheating with a more long-term solution.
You can either take it to a local repair technician or do it yourself to remove the dust.

If you decide to do it yourself, all you have to do is remove the clogged dirt once the case is separated and you can access the ventilation from the inside.
The best way I’ve found to do this is to poke a clean paintbrush into the vent and push the dirt out with its bristles.
Use a compressed can of air to clean the entire motherboard, which will remove any surface dust that could collect and cause another clog later.
Remove any dust from any heat sinks you see, and if you’re confident (and please be careful), remove the heat sink to check if the thermal paste is still wet (it should be gooey).
If it appears to have dried up, a syringe can be purchased for a reasonable price on Amazon. (This is our preference; we prefer Artic Silver) and reapply a small amount to the chip to help with heat transfer to the heat sink

So, if a component fails on your motherboard, you’re in serious trouble. You have the option of enlisting the assistance of a specialist electronics expert or replacing the motherboard, which, as you can imagine, will be quite costly.
Is there a straightforward solution? Allowing your laptop to overheat is a bad idea in the first place.
