Cheap laptops: what to look out for

Cheap laptops often entice buyers with low prices under £200, but unless you’re buying a Chromebook, you’re unlikely to get your money’s worth with these models. Chromebooks primarily run on Chrome OS, which means they rely on Google Chrome’s cloud-based services rather than more expensive components. As a result, you’ll frequently find cheap laptops under £200 that are well worth your money if they were designed with this functionality in mind.

Budget laptops are frequently on sale, but every now and then we come across bargains with mid-range specs at entry-level prices.

You’ll probably consume those gigabytes faster than you think, and storing those large Windows 10 updates can be a challenge in and of itself. Cheap laptop deals with a Windows 10 operating system but only 16 or 32GB of storage space are worth looking for. If you’re running Windows 10 or 10s, that means the smallest hard drive we recommend on this page is a 64GB drive.

Cheap laptops may also come with the caveat that they don’t come with any kind of operating system. We do include the occasional freeDOS budget laptop in this roundup because they can save you money, but we’ll let you know when we do. These FreeDOS laptops can be appealing (and they often are if you’re willing to install your own copy of Windows or Linux), but it’s important to double-check the specs and low price before you buy.
