The Dell XPS 13The series has consistently wowed us here at T3, and the latest version of the laptop continues that trend – it’s powerful, supremely well built, and compact, which is pretty much everything you could want in a lightweight laptop. This will not make you feel weighed down.

The Dell XPS 13 is a capable and competent laptop for late-night Netflix to early-morning report writing. This portable computer is equipped with the latest 11th-generation Intel processors and up to 16GB of RAM, making it capable of handling anything you throw at it.

But it’s the 13.4-inch display with the ultra-thin bezels that really sets the XPS 13 apart: you can go all the way up to 4K resolution if you want to, but the 1,920 x 1,080 resolution models still look great (4K doesn’t make a huge difference on a laptop display this size).

Got to pay the Apple premium

The only reason the new M1 MacBook Air isn’t at the top of our list is that it costs a little more than its Windows counterparts. However, Apple’s new M1 processor makes it an even better buy than the Intel-powered MacBook Air it replaces in terms of value for money. You will not be disappointed if you can afford it.

This results in significant speed increases, and the MacBook Air eliminates the need to choose between portability and power. Although the new MacBook Air appears to be identical to the previous model, there is a revolution taking place on the inside. It provides both. Apple has switched to its own processors, which combine system and graphics memory, whereas other laptops have separate system and graphics memory.

That resolves our only major gripe with the MacBook Air in the past: Intel-powered models weren’t always stellar performers, but this Apple-powered model is. In fact, it’s the most popular option in our office. The new M1-powered Macs have incredible speed, and we’ve seen the new MacBook Air completely destroy laptops that cost many times more in benchmark tests. best laptops guide.

The camera is better than the previous version – thanks to a new image processor, it has better dynamic range, noise reduction, and face detection – but it’s still an annoyance in what is otherwise a near-perfect lightweight laptop package. Mind you, there is still one minor issue, and that is the webcam. When you consider the camera technology that Apple incorporates into every iPhone, a 720p FaceTime camera seems like an odd choice.

The MacBook Air (M1, 2020) is a game-changer and a phenomenally light laptop. T3’s full review of this fantastic lightweight laptop can be found here. But that’s a minor quibble. MacBook Air (M1, 2020) review.

The Lenovo IdeaPad 3i It won’t win any benchmarking races and shouldn’t be used for intensive tasks like video editing or gaming, but it’s a great all-around choice for light computing Windows laptops.

The price is what really stands out here, and it’s why the 3i is so high on our list of the best lightweight laptops: it’s less expensive than almost every other system in this buying guide. As a result, if cost is a consideration, the IdeaPad 3i should be on your shortlist.

The screen is a strong medium-size 14-inch panel, making this a portable, lightweight laptop that you can take almost anywhere – and it’s built to be bumped around a bit, too, with a solid build quality.

The system comes preloaded with a copy of Windows 10 in S mode, which means the operating system is optimized for light and quick use. As you can see from our LG Gram 17 review (2021), this is a laptop that gets lightweight right – despite having a larger-than-average 17-inch screen, the laptop is anything but bulky and unwieldy.

In fact, the LG Gram 17 is ultraportable in every sense of the word, weighing only 1,350 grams (nearly 3 lbs). This, combined with its slim dimensions (26.01 x 38.02 x 1.78 cm), makes it an ultraportable in every sense of the word.

LG has done an excellent job here, creating a laptop that looks great from every angle without being flashy or overbearing. Definitely deserving of a spot on our list of the best lightweight laptops for 2021, and it would also place highly on a list of the most stylish laptops for 2021.

You can get this laptop with some serious internal specs, which adds to its appeal even more, though the integrated graphics mean you shouldn’t try any serious gaming on it. It is, however, ideal for carrying a large screen around with you wherever you go.

As we note in our Latitude 9410 2-in-1 review, this premium laptop from Dell offers good looks, fast performance, and 2-in-1 flexibility, unlike many other systems on this list of the best lightweight laptops.

The laptop is also very thin, with a height that tapers from 8.5mm to 15mm and a weight of only 1.36kg, making it very portable. With this laptop, switching between meetings and commuting is simple.

The rotating screen is obviously the main attraction here, and it can rotate 360 degrees, allowing you to use this system as a laptop, a slate, or a mobile screen propped up in a V shape.

Internally, the system is equipped with 10th Generation Intel Core processors, 16GB of RAM, and M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD storage. There are plenty of ports to choose from, including two Thunderbolt 3 ports, HDMI 2.0, and USB 3.1 with power sharing.

One of the best lightweight laptops you can buy if you’re a student or a business user on a budget is the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Carbon.

As the name implies, the laptop’s chassis is made of high-strength carbon fibre, making it both durable and light. It weighs less than a kilogram and is roughly the size of a notepad. It’ll be able to withstand knocks and bumps in your bag, giving you peace of mind if you plan to carry it around a lot.

The low-profile keys on the keyboard are large and firm, making typing enjoyable. It’ll be great for getting work done wherever you are – at home, on the train, or in a cafe – thanks to 11th Gen Intel Core processors and a crisp QHD 13.3inch screen.

The battery life is the only drawback. If you can live with that, this ultraportable laptop is a great choice. It’s not the best you’ll find; in fact, it’s fairly average, but it only takes a few minutes to recharge.

As we note in our HP Spectre x360 14 review This is a super-thin, high-end laptop that can be used as a slate as well as a laptop.

The screen isn’t the only feature that makes this ultraportable laptop a good choice; it also has an 11th Gen Intel Core i7 Tiger Lake CPU, Intel Iris XE GPU, and a 3,000 x 2,000 resolution OLED screen if it’s specced for it.

Thanks to a collaboration with audio masters Bang & Olufsen, the audio system on this light laptop is also top notch (for the product category). It impresses across the soundscape, from deep and enveloping bass to crisp clarity of percussive sounds.

The system’s battery life is also not bad, clocking in at 10 hours and 30 minutes on a single charge, and it runs a full version of Windows 10 as its operating system. The design is also very modern, with its mix of sharp angles and clean, straight lines.

As long as you don’t plan on doing any heavy gaming or demanding video editing on this device, the battery life and performance are excellent. Our favorite aspect of the Samsung Galaxy Book S experience is how small and attractive it is – it’s the ideal laptop to keep in your bag while on the go and pull out at a moment’s notice.

We have to admit that we were blown away by what the Huawei MateBook X Pro 2020 has to offer, but given how good the 2019 model was, it’s perhaps no surprise that its successor is one of the best laptops of the year – and one of the lightest, given its compact dimensions.

Unless you’re doing some serious gaming or video editing, this laptop should be able to handle everything you need and more. There’s an Nvidia GPU and a 10th-generation Intel i7 processor under the hood, as well as 16GB of RAM. If you can get past the price – which is high, to be sure – we believe you’ll find this to be a very capable laptop.

You won’t get a stylus to fully utilize the Surface Book 2 in tablet mode, but if you can afford the Surface Book 2’s astronomically high price, you can probably spend a little more to complete the dream setup.

How do you pick the best light laptop for you?

The appeal of the best lightweight laptops is easy to understand: you don’t want something that’s too heavy or large to carry around comfortably, but you also don’t want to be typing emails and browsing the web on a tiny device. The ideal tool for the job is a super-thin, feather-light ultraportable.

With that in mind, all of the ultraportables featured in our curated best lightweight laptop guide for 2021 deliver on the specs front while also looking great. The order of the day is all-metal constructions, wafer-thin form factors, and internals that can handle demanding tasks quickly.

As you may have noticed, we at T3 aren’t fans of slow, shoddy technology, so you can rest assured that these are the best lightweight and compact laptops for speed, style, and quality available in 2021.

How we test lightweight laptops

T3 ensures that traveling with and using a system while on the go is central to each review, despite the fact that testing lightweight laptops is very similar to testing most other types of laptops.

This allows us to determine important factors such as the battery life of a lightweight laptop, the durability of its chassis and keyboard, and how easy it is to slip into a bag. These are important real-world features that no amount of fancy specs can make up for, as they are essential to the lightweight laptop experience.

We’ll find out if a system has a bad trackpad or a cheap-feeling chassis here. T3 evaluates lightweight laptops first and foremost in terms of their overall package, design, and build quality. We’re curious about what the system includes out of the box, as well as how ergonomic and aesthetically pleasing it is.

The lightweight laptop is then used to see how the benchmark performance translates to real-world usage. After that, we look at the system’s specs and hardware before benchmarking the laptop to see how well it performs.

We want to see how simple the system is to use, as well as if anything has been skimped on to save money. Finally, we look at the operating system, software, and any additional unique features, such as biometric sign-in technology, touchscreen stylus support, or built-in webcams and mics.

The lightweight laptop is then given a rating, with five stars being the best and one star being the worst. If an ultraportable receives a high score, it is considered for inclusion in T3’s list of the best lightweight laptops.
