We’ll help you work out which is the better buy for an Apple laptop: the cheaper, lighter option or the more expensive, powerhouse option? We’ll explain everything you need to know. Of course what’s right for one laptop buyer isn’t necessarily right for another, and so we’ll break down the differences between these two ranges so you know exactly what you’re looking at. You’ll also need to decide how you’re going to be using your new computer, so you can make the best decision based on the information we’ll give you.

The MacBook Air is the smaller and lighter laptop of the two When closed, at its thinnest point it’s 0. However, it’s worth noting that the MacBook Air is actually 1. But its tapered design leaves it feeling slimmer and more handle-able overall. The MacBook Air weighs in at 1. All three models use Apple’s latest generation of keyboard, which is a crucial improvement over previous models.

The keys have a fairly short travel, but you can feel the movement, and there’s great feedback, so accuracy is no problem. All the models have excellent trackpads, too — this is one area Apple nailed a long time ago, and never missteps on. The inch MacBook Pro finds room for noticeably bigger and more impressive speakers than you get on either the MacBook Air or the inch MacBook Pro… or almost any laptop we’ve tried, really.

They’re genuinely impressive, and not in a mealy-mouthed ‘well, they’re good for laptop speakers ‘ way. They use an advanced design with two opposing drivers in each side, one facing up, one facing down, so that the vibrations from each will cancel each other out, so you get big noise levels without feeling any shake in the frame. The stereo separation is impressive, though, and you certainly won’t feel like you’re missing out when it comes to sounds.

The MacBook Pro models also have new microphone arrays that Apple’s calls ‘studio quality’, though we’d still probably suggest a real microphone for your hit podcast. However, in our new world of video-conferencing all the time, they’re a big improvement over most built-in mics.

There are also some differences in terms of the ports you’ve got available, which will get on to shortly. Finally, while all these laptops come in either silver or space grey, only the MacBook Air offers a gold option — and it’s a really nice colour.

The comparison is really close when it comes to the display. The difference doesn’t matter much if you’re just doing document work though the extra brightness makes the Pro easier to see in bright light conditions, such as sunlightbut the broader colours and boosted brightness matter for creative work. The larger MacBook Pro sports a inch screen running at a x resolution with the wider colour gamut and extra brightnesswhich gives a lot more room to work.

The single most important thing in our opinion is that all three models support True Tone, which changes the colour balance of the screen to match the lighting of the room you’re in, so you don’t get that off-putting thing of a screen appearing blue when the light around you is yellow. This is kinder on the eyes in the evening — we wouldn’t want to live without it. The MacBook Air first: you start off with a 1. There is a model that’s a step up, though, giving you a quad-core 1. The base version is good for web browsing, document work and basic photo and video editing, for example, but if you wanted to get fancier with Photoshop, 4K video or programming then we’d suggest the quad-core version.

Getting the extra power plus double the storage for that upgrade fee seems like a good deal to us. Graphics are provided by integrated Intel Plus chips on all MacBook Air models, which is a significant step up over previous versions of the Air. The inch MacBook Pro is the next step up in power.

At its cheapest, you get a 1. These lower-end versions of the MacBook Pro inch haven’t had a spec upgrade this year — only the keyboard was improved. However, at the higher end, the MacBook Pro inch has had a very nice upgrade in The top-end inch MacBook Pro configurations start out at a 2.

The next model up gets you a 2. If you really want to trick the laptop out, you can go all the way up to a 2.

MacBook Air vs Pro: What’s the best MacBook?

We should note that inch MacBook Pro hasn’t received a full upgrade inand is rumoured to get one in towards the end of the year. That top-end inch MacBook Pro is an absolute beast, but overkill unless you’re rendering video or doing something equally demanding — for most casual computing use, the lower specs on the MacBook Air and inch MacBook Pro will do you just fine.Picking between MacBook Air vs Pro used to be easy, and now that’s not exactly true.

As noted in our MacBook Air review and MacBook Pro 13 reviewApple finally replaced its ‘Butterfly’-switch keyboards for more reliable keys across all of its notebooks.

Formerly, the inch MacBook Pro was the only laptop with the new keyboard, giving it an edge on its smaller siblings. But now, the performance, price and battery life of each laptop give shoppers plenty of reasons to pick one over the other. Plus, the Air now has a lower starting price and beefier specs. Is that enough to make us look away from the mightier MacBook Pros?

Not only are the Pros available in two different sizes, they offer higher-end processors and on the pricier models more ports. And that inch MacBook Pro? It sounds better than probably any laptop you’ve ever heard. If you’re making your next buying decision based around the impending Apple Silicon Macs, your buying decision isn’t exactly as clean cut as it was a few weeks ago. We now have seen reasons to believe they may not arrive this year.

MacBook Air 2020 vs. MacBook Air 2019: Should you upgrade?

Those who aren’t dead set on getting a Mac should look at our Surface Laptop 3 inch, Intel reviewas it’s a minimalist notebook that even an Apple user can appreciate. Incredibly similar, like fraternal twins, the MacBook Air and Pro share machined aluminum shells, come in silver and Space Gray, and all have the little lip at the front of the base, for easily opening the screen.

The little things, though, might make a difference for you. The inch MacBook Pro is big and brash, but a masterful achievement, with Apple getting a larger screen into inch MacBook Pro’s chassis by slimming down the bezels. By contrast, the Air and inch Pro have slightly larger bezels, which we’d love to see shrunk a tad.

While the MacBook Air’s tear-drop it’s more like a wedge than a rectangle design is iconic, my favorite distinct feature about the Air is its gold color option, which just looks so much more attractive than the light and dark silver options.

When you look at their measurements, these laptops are again more alike than different. Of course the inch Pro is a larger machine, but it’s got the same 0. Naturally, it’s also a little heftier, at 4.

If you want plenty of ports, the MacBook Air is not the best choice. It offers only two Thunderbolt 3 ports. The same thing goes for the entry-level inch MacBook Pro. The MacBook Air and the entry-level MacBook Pro inch which keep their ports on the left, which can be annoying to work around and creating a lot of cable management work.

We’ve got another really close race here. Based on our lab test results, the MacBook Air maxes out at nits of brightness, while the MacBook Pro inch: nits; inch: nits got even brighter. On color output, though, they’re more similar. Apple’s MacBooks have had a keyboard issue in recent years, when the company made a new ‘butterfly’-style key mechanism that was both a bit too shallow and also controversial because of reliability issues that led to a repair program, and people blowing air into their keyboards.

And after 3 years of using that keyboard in all of its MacBooks, Apple gave up on the butterfly keys and switched them out for the Magic Keyboard similar to its external keyboard of the same name keys, which are frankly so great that they should have been used all along. The long-awaited MacBook Air definitely ticks some of the boxes we were hoping to see addressed with the MacBook Air Obviously, the new Magic Keyboard is at top of mind for many buyers after years of unreliable and uncomfortable butterfly keys.

But what else does the new MacBook Air do to set itself apart from previous models? Here’s a look at how the MacBook Air stacks up against last year’s MacBook Air and our recommendation on who should upgrade. The MacBook Air is already shipping from Apple and is available to order from most major retailers. Winner: MacBook Air T here are quite a few shared features between the two laptops, but doubling the base storage to GB and adding 10th Gen CPUs with improved Intel Iris Plus graphics makes the MacBook Air a clear upgrade in the specs department.

Side-by-side with the MacBook Airthe one change you might notice is that the MacBook Air is just slightly thicker at 0. This also accounts for the increased weight, going from 2. By far, the most eagerly anticipated update is the new MacBook Air’s Magic Keyboard with its oh-so functional scissor switches. This replaces the unreliable butterfly switches used in the MacBook Air since the redesign. Not only is the new Magic Keyboard a more pleasant typing experience day-to-day, but it should keep working reliably for years to come.

The one other notable change to the keyboard is the return of the inverted T arrow keys, which were banished in the redesign. This makes finding these keys by touch much easier.

The large Force Touch trackpad on the MacBook Air remains identical to its predecessor, which was already best-in-class. No complaints there. We’ve probably said enough about it already, but yes the new keyboard is a massive win for the MacBook Air There were no major changes made to the MacBook Air’s display, which isn’t a complaint. The panel was one of our favorite features of the MacBook Air This new model has all the same features. In our testing, however, the MacBook Air did show some marked improvement over last year’s Air.

The brightness of the MacBook Air screen also saw a positive boost in our lab tests, with an average of nits, beyond the average for premium laptops. While the basic specs remain the same for the MacBook Air the truth is in the testing and the panel is a solid step up from last year.

In our testing of the core i3 MacBook Air it definitely shows some improvement over the Air. In our Handbrake video-editing test, the MacBook Air bested last year’s model by almost 9 minutes. At 27 minutes and 10 seconds it is still behind the category average, but a much more respectable effort. While the move to a base core i3 processor is a little disconcerting, the jump from an 8th Gen to a 10th Gen Intel processor along with the faster SSD appears to more than make up for it based on our testing.

Upgrading to one of the higher-end processor options will make it considerably up to 2x according to Apple faster than the MacBook Air Despite the updated processors and identical battery size One of the few backslides of the MacBook Airalthough to be clear, this is based on Apple’s claimed battery life.

Last year’s MacBook Air didn’t live up to those claims, so it’s possible this moves the MacBook Air into the win column once we are done testing it. Anyone who has owned or owns one of the butterfly keyboard MacBook models would tell you that the keyboard alone is reason enough to upgrade, and it would be hard to disagree there.

Gone are the reliability concerns, and most users are going to find it more comfortable to type on as well. Additionally, most of the MacBook Air’s internals — CPU, RAM and graphics — were upgraded and based on our tests will deliver a better experience even with the base core i3 processor.

Yes, the MacBook Air did get slightly thicker and heavier, but it’s a barely perceptible increase and won’t make a difference when carrying the laptop in your bag. If you have been holding off for the last few years of butterfly keyboards, now is a great time to buy. For owners of the or MacBook Air, the CPU boost and new keyboard still make this a worthwhile upgrade, but as your keyboard is still covered under Apple’s warranty program, it’s understandable if you want to hold off for a more significant redesign.
