Trying to get a one-dock-to-rule-them-all solution for my Dell laptop and new MacBook Pro. Followed your installation instructions but I’m getting the following output, and no device is recognized in the system information. I ran crutils enable –without kext. When I do crutils disable, the dock is recognized but still no video output.

There are a few other reports of video not working with the Dell TB However, this is not something that Thunderbolt 3 Unblocker addresses; as far as this project is concerned, it is activating the dock, but other parts of macOS are responsible for the video output. Ok understood.

So is it normal for it to not detect the dock when I use “crutils enable –without kext” but recognize when I use “crutils disable”? That was one difference between installation instructions here and KhaosT’s. Edit: Someone told me that csr-active-config does not exist if SIP is enabled, so this isn’t needed anymore.

Ok how’s this. Please do csrutil enable –kext. Immediately after loading the kext, please run sudo dmesg and attach the output.

Reboot into the recovery partition and run csrutil enable –without kext then reboot back into regular macOS. Starting poll type 2 Restarting poll type 2 Command 0x2 completed. So it looks like it is succeeding with SIP disabled with csrutil enable –without kext. It now does detect the Dell dock but nothing on the dock works.

Ok thanks!

It looks like Thunderbolt3Unblocker is working then; after it “unblocks” the dock, it’s up to macOS and other drivers to support its features. When you say “nothing on the dock works,” you are talking about USB ports, etc.?

Note that an OS release a few months ago stopped the video output from working, but other features are expected to work. With a laptop docking station, you can attach your system to multiple monitors and a wide variety of peripherals with extra USB ports. Depending on your needs, you can find budget laptop docking stations that will output to dual HD monitors over standard USB, or more expensive docking stations that have support for USB Type-C and for 4K monitors that will work not only with your current laptop, but also your next one.

It works with all of the newest standards, including USB Type-C for charging and external displays, along with support for a 4K monitor. It’s oriented in a vertical position, so you can’t keep the dock under your laptop or monitors, but its performance and support for three displays simultaneously makes the Triple Display Dock our top choice.

Considering Plugable’s other offerings, we weren’t surprised that its Thunderbolt 3 Docking Station is excellent. It’s the best we’ve tested so far, with a reasonable price, the ability to be used both vertically and horizontally and a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter in the box. It charges a laptop while powering up to two 4K displays or a single 5K monitor and has a few extra USB 3. It supplies full-HD support to two monitors, and has all the ports that the vast majority of users need.

If you don’t have a 4K monitor on your desk or a USB Type-C port on your laptop, this will support everything you have today at a low price. It’s clamp design allows you to keep the majority of your cables under your desk, allowing for a neat workspace. The one downside to a dock is that it takes up space on your desk, but Targus’ DV1K-4K docking station is easy to tuck away.

The small, well-built dock is designed to fit under your laptop, sporting a nonslip surface to keep your system from sliding down. The dock is also small enough to fit under your monitors, if you prefer. Most businesses have USB 3. Look no further than Dell’s new D universal dock, which has a built-in adapter to easily switch between the standards, so you can connect it to just about any laptop.

See our full Dell D Universal Dock review. HP’s Thunderbolt Dock with Audio is perfect for managing a ton of ports as well as having group conference calls due to its echo-canceling microphone and dedicated speakers. The ports include: one Thunderbolt 3 port, three USB 3. The Kensington SDP is a solid overall docking station if you need something portable and small, but being small comes at a price, as the dock is only able to power up to one 4K monitor at a time at Hz.

Despite that, it has a decent number of ports and it can charge a laptop while also powering a 4K monitor. The underside also allows the mounting of any 75mm or mm VESA compatible external display. The Linedock Docking Station is specifically designed for the inch MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, and while it’s still compatible with other laptops even those with different sizesyou won’t get that perfect fit.

It comes with three USB 3. It also offers a 20, mAh battery pack inside of it that you can use to charge a variety of devices including your laptop. The Kensington SDP can only power one 4K monitor at a time or two 2K monitors at a time, which is where it stumbles against its competitors. During testing, I found the Type-C port to be quite flimsy, as it would dislodge on its own frequently.

Laptop Mag.Macbook pro – one cable – two monitors. Has anyone tested this? Brand Representative for DisplayLink. The Dell D does. We usually show it at tradeshows with the macbook Air and 3x 4K. Have you changed the default action for the close lid event? If left at the default setting the laptop will go into sleep mode when the lid is closed. I believe that issue happens when the Dell DisplayLInk for the dock is not installed prior to connecting the systems, and also has to do with the specific DisplayLink version they dont mix and match nicely.

Thunderbolt 3 Dock

I had that issue as well and after installing a few i just got in the habit of making sure the latest one was installed before I connected the systems to the dock. I have not had many issues since then.

Does it have to be daisy chained? It looks like that dock would handle 2 monitors, with 2 cables and connected to the Mac with a TB cable. We have some StarTec docks that do just that for our thankfully few Mac users. I tested it myself and it doesn’t work. Daisy-chaining Dell monitors will work with Dell computers. The only monitors that will work for daisy-chaining are USB-C type monitors. Dell does have USB-C type monitors.

Some of it will depend on specifically which MacBook Pro you are asking about. But assuming you mean a recent one I’m using an Elgato TB3 dock that works great. Single cable to the dock gives me power, gigabit ethernet, dual monitors pair of 27″ pextra USB, etc.

Works so well I have a second dock on my desk at home. Brand Representative for StarTech. Hi Sifos! I hooked both monitors to display ports, then one to display port and one to hdmi, and one to display port and one to usb-c. Still the effect is the same: both monitors have mirrored screens. Two external monitors, one Thunderbolt 3 cable. It would not work using any other combination, e. This is the only config that did not mirror the two displays.

I have the DisplayLink drivers installed. DellFollowers – Follow Mentions Products. Samuel Dell.

Fast Answers! We have a load of new WD19 docks. They work perfectly with Dell Laptops, by which I mean you can have two monitors connected to the dock, and then the additional laptop screen three in total. The MacBook Pro doesn’t work.

I get one extra screen, but not the second. I have used a D dock in the past, and that worked fine. Any help would be appreciated. Unfortunately, the WD19 Docking Station was never tested by Dell on the proprietary Apple hardware and operating system. The WD19 driver page only shows Windows 10 bit.

You should start a new thread on the Apple Forum to get assistance from other Apple users. Dell had given MacBooks the driver previously on the D’s, hopefully this will be fixed and we’ll get the driver too for this one? One screen use is not fun.

Like the laptop quite a bit, however, I have a bit of a dilemma. I tried a Dell D, but it wouldn’t charge the laptop, and the display switching was atrocious huge lag of up to 15 seconds when I would close the lid to limit graphics to just the external monitor.

Yes, I had the most recent updates from DisplayLink and the Firmware on the device was up to date. I am sending that back. So I am here to find alternatives. I do not consider myself much of a gamer at least not at the moment, Flight Sim X and some Golf are about my speed and so I am not convinced I need or want the Core V2 especially at an additional cost of another about If that is truly the only viable option, it’s on the table, but wanted to see what else folks had in mind.

While I am new to the forum, I did take the time to review other threads using the search, but they appear somewhat segmented and outdated, hence this new thread. Cheers, Jeff. JayVeeFeb 3, I recently got a new MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt 3 ports. These ports are great because they can carry power, USB and output to an external display simultaneously.

It also passes power through to the computer. Over the WD15, it adds DisplayPort. Note that it connects to the computer via Thunderbolt 3 instead of USB-C, which means it can deliver higher screen resolutions see below. First of all, the DA just works. Next up, the WD The Macbook did, however, automatically turn on when plugging in the USB-C cable, even in clamshell mode. One oddity I found was that the front left USB 3 port would only deliver power, not data, while a device was plugged into the rear USB 3 port — while I did not find this documented anywhere, it seems likely that this is a hardware limitation and not a Mac issue — see below for more information.

Finally, the Dell TB I assume everything else will work just as it does with the WD So Apple just needs to get their drivers fixed. I have the TB16 and it does not appear to work with the macbook pro.

Fokker d7

It will charge it but no displays or usb drives are detected by the macbook. I suspect a driver needs to be loaded…. Thunderbolt itself is driverless. It would be great if you could try that out and report back.

There were some other minor hiccups but all in all it worked.

I wonder if anyone tried the TB Let me know if that helps. I have tried plugging the TB15 into a Macbook the annoyingly named Air replacement, that isEarly model.

Actually the dock seemed to stop working entirely for my XPS13 until I unplugged the Macbook and turned the power off on the dock as well.
