Dell XPS 15 vs Macbook Pro Design, Dimension & Weight Comparison

First off, the XPS 15 and Macbook Pro are as cool as you’d like. Both laptops have very little design pattern on their chassis, but they still deliver in terms of their appearance.

For these two, simplicity does it. While they make look simple, it doesn’t take much for a trained eye to notice the numerous design details that give both laptops their subtle perfection.

In the case of the XPS 15, I can’t stress how much I’ve admired Dell’s consistency and constant improvement. While they’ve made sure to stick to their unique design pattern without hints of Apple’s trademark design, they’ve also made sure to upgrade with every version.

To be precise, I have the utmost admiration for the way Dell always manages to slim down their chassis. Of course, the XPS 15, for the most part, is a bigger version of the XPS 13.

However, the size of the XPS 15 is not what I had imagined. In fact, Dell found a way to somehow shave a bit of thickness off the laptop.

Believe me, I was amazed to find out that this laptop is about 5.5 percent smaller than its previous version. With the same 18 mm thickness, the XPS 15 has nearly the same dimension as the Macbook Pro.

XPS 15 measures 344.72 x 230.14 x 18 mm. Though it’s not the lightest laptop, Dell XPS 15 is considerably light.

In addition to the reduction in the size of the laptop, the Dell XPS 15 remains as sturdy as ever. The laptop’s chassis is built with CNC aluminum which makes it look like a solid unit of block.

I could barely find words to describe this piece of beauty. For the most part, the Dell XPS 15 looks like pure magic.

With its smooth beveled edges, its neatly cut construction lines, down to its fine platinum silver coating, I was nearly convinced it that was an alchemist at work.

Beyond engineering, it seemed like there was more to the XPS 15 each time I looked at it. The Dell XPS 15’s superb construction makes it look like a laptop that came from the future.

What’s more amazing is the completely different elating feeling you get when you have the laptop resting in your hands. Believe me when I say the sensation you get when you have the laptop in your sight is even more heightened when you touch it.

Interesting right? I bet you are beginning to understand why I chose to describe the XPS 15 as a solid piece of magic.

Design-wise, this laptop beats nearly every impression I’ve had with premium laptops. The Dell XPS 15’s gorgeous design is stylish but simple.

With its lid closed, anyone could mistake the laptop for a beautiful solid piece of block. This is because of how simple the laptop’s design pattern is.

Aside from the glossy Dell logo that was inscribed on the XPS 15’s lid, you won’t see any other pattern on the exterior of the laptop. If you ask me, this is more than enough for an exterior design feature.

When you notice how brilliantly the logo catches the tiniest spectrum of light, I bet you won’t see the need for any other pattern on the laptop’s lid. In a world without Apple’s Macbook Pro, the Dell XPS 15 would easily be the only benchmark for gorgeous premium laptops.

However, the Macbook Pro is still very much present and it doesn’t look like it is slowing down in terms of its looks either. Although it features a few notable changes in its aesthetics just like the XPS 15, the Macbook Pro’s design is still majorly the one you are familiar with.

Maybe because the Apple’s unique design blueprint has been around for some years, we have begun to take Apple’s professionalism for granted. If not for any other thing, they deserve huge praise for consistently delivering their craft at the highest level possible.

Instead of getting tired of the repetitive Macbook Pro’s design, I chose to view the design of this laptop as an emblem of Apple’s craft. Besides, the Macbook Pro’s design is not bad in anyway.

Now, I get that one could have gotten tired of getting the same design with every version, but the engineering of this laptop is still astonishing. Even though I’m familiar with its design, I can’t help but marvel at what has become an “Apple design classic” each time I see the laptop.

As usual, the Macbook Pro has a unibody aluminum chassis. Like the XPS 15, the Macbook Pro’s design is simple yet stylish.

Aside from the familiar half-eaten apple logo on its lid, you won’t see any single pattern on the Macbook Pro.

It has a smooth Silver chassis which also comes in Space Gray. With whichever color option, the Macbook Pro still gives me all the chills each time I see it.

Holding it feels even better. Thanks to the extreme attention that Apple seems to have put in the construction of the Macbook Pro, it feels incredibly solid and sturdy.

Although, the Macbook Pro is a bit bigger than the XPS 15, it is considerably light and compact. It measures 358.9 x 247.1 x 18 mm and weighs 2040 g.

As if both laptops’ exterior weren’t stunning enough, their interior are equally impressive.

Open the XPS 15’s lid and you will get drawn into a different realm of carbon fiber beauty. A black carbon fiber material adorns the interior of the XPS 15.

This carbon fiber material covers the entire keyboard deck area. On either side of the keyboard deck, you will see a speaker.

Similarly, the Macbook Pro also has two speakers on either side of its keyboard deck. However, unlike the carbon fiber on the XPS 15, the Macbook Pro’s keyboard deck is completely surrounded by the same aluminum construction on its exterior.

These speakers take up the same height area as the keyboard.

Speaking of the keyboard, the XPS 15 and Macbook Pro’s keyboards feature slight changes. While the XPS 15’s keyboard keys are now 9.7 percent larger than they were.

Also, Apple has replaced the Butterfly keyboard with the Magic keyboard.

Generally, I felt that Apple’s Magic keyboard was a bit better than the XPS 15‘s keyboard. The Macbook Pro’s keys felt more firm under my fingers compared to the mushy feeling ones on the XPS 15.

On the 10FastFingers typing test, I averaged 73 words per minute with the Dell XPS 15. Meanwhile, I completed 70 words per minute on the Macbook Pro.

Moving to the touchpads below both laptops, you will get completely different touchpads on each laptop. In the case of the XPS 15, you get a touchpad that’s 62 percent bigger than the one on its previous version.

The touchpad on XPS 15 measures 5.9 x 3.5 inches. The laptop’s touchpad is big enough, super sensitive, and extremely smooth.

Also, Windows 10 Gestures and other multitouch gestures were all swift on the laptop’s touchpad.

The Macbook Pro, on the other hand, comes with a touchpad that Apple calls the “Force Touch trackpad. This 4 x 3-inch touchpad doesn’t click physically, instead, the trackpad uses force sensors and haptic feedback to simulate the clicking sensation.

Using this touchpad may feel a bit weird if you have not come across it before. It takes a little bit of time to get familiar with it.

On the good side, the touchpad does have a few benefits. It has the ability to perform a Force click which activates special functions.

You can do things like previewing a page in a small window, carrying out pressure sensitive commands – like moving through a page based on how fast you press on the touchpad.

Once you get familiar with the touchpad, making use of its functionalities will come naturally to you.

Overall, I found the touchpad on the Macbook Pro to be extremely smooth and sensitive.

In terms of ports, the Dell XPS 15 seems to be offering a lot more for its users compared to the Macbook Pro. The XPS 15 offers two Thunderbolt 3 ports, one HDMI port, one USB-C port, one USB-C to USB-A port, and a full-size SD card slot.

Meanwhile, the Macbook Pro two USB 3.0 ports, one HDMI port, and two Thunderbolt 2 ports.

At the end of the day, deciding which of these two laptops has the better design and build will come down to one’s preference. While the Dell XPS 15 is better in some aspects of its build, the Macbook Pro also surpasses it in some parts.

Honestly, this aspect has shown us a bit of how intense the battle between these two laptops will be throughout this comparison. Since both laptops could as well be the gold standard for premium laptop design, they are an equal match for each other.

They are the kind of laptop whose class could be noticed from a mile away. In fact, they can easily be distinguished from a ton of other laptops.

Hence, both the Dell XPS 15 and the Macbook Pro score a nine in this Dell XPS 15 vs Macbook Pro design comparison.

Dell XPS 15 vs Macbook Processor (CPU) Performance Comparison

As I had anticipated, the competition looks intense already going by their processor configuration options. Both laptops have a wealth of processor configuration options to offer their respective users.

In the case of the XPS 15, Dell offers four different processor configuration options. You can buy the XPS 15 with either an eight-core Intel Core i5-10300H processor or a six-core Intel Core i7-10750H processor.

Other configuration options include an eight-core Intel Core i7-10875H processor or an eight-core Intel Core i9-10885H processor.

To give more information about these processors, the Core i5-10300H processor has a base frequency of 2.50 GHz and a boost frequency of 4.5 GHz. Meanwhile, the Core i7-10750H processor has a base frequency of 2.60 GHz and a boost frequency of 5.0 GHz.

Furthermore, the Core i7-10875H processor has a base frequency of 2.30 GHz and a boost frequency of 5.1 GHz. Lastly, the Core i9-10885H processor has a base frequency of 2.40 GHz and a boost frequency of 5.3 GHz.

In the case of the Macbook Pro, Apple offers three different processor configuration options. You can buy the Macbook Pro with either a quad-core Intel Core i7-4770HQ processor or a quad-core Intel Core i7-4870HQ processor.

Apple also offers a quad-core Intel Core i7-4980HQ processor for the Macbook Pro’s processor.

Like I did for the XPS 15’s processor configuration options, I will quickly give more details about the Macbook Pro’s processor configuration options.

The Intel Core 4770HQ processor operates a base frequency of 2.20 GHz and is capable of reaching a boost frequency of 4.40 GHz. Meanwhile, the Core i7-4870HQ processor can attain a boost frequency of 3.70 GHz from a base frequency of 2.50 GHz.

Of all these configuration options, the Core i7-4980HQ processor has the highest base and boost frequency. From a base frequency of 2.80 GHz frequency, it can boost up to 4.0 GHz.

One thing for sure is, regardless of any one of these processors you configure your laptop with, you will still get an excellent performance.

Let’s proceed with our review and comparison to find out. However, I will like to make a few things clear before I continue.

For this review, our Dell XPS 15 review unit came equipped with the Intel Core i7-10875H processor. Meanwhile, our Macbook Pro review unit features the Intel Core i7-4870HQ processor.

We usually start our processor performance tests with a real-world performance test before moving on to benchmark tests. We followed this same procedure in this review.

To no one’s surprise, both the XPS 15 and Macbook Pro were absolute beasts in terms of their processor performance. Both laptops can easily function as office laptops for multimedia editors, engineers, as well as scientists.

They both offered impressive performance when I tested them. I was able to easily surf the web, send emails, edit documents, and even carry out more intensive operations like image and video editing.

Their performances were so smooth that I couldn’t find any problem worth noting.

After carrying out the real-world performance tests, I swiftly moved on to test both laptops with synthetic benchmarks. I tested both laptops with the Cinebench R15 synthetic benchmark test.

You might be wondering, “what is the Cinebench R15 benchmark test?” The Cinebench R15 test is a synthetic benchmark tool commonly used to test a computer’s raw processing horsepower.

We use this benchmark because it works well for testing both Intel and AMD-based systems.

Since it uses all available CPU cores for testing, we can always ascertain how well the computer can perform when it is running with a single core. Similarly, we can find out how well the laptop performs when all of its cores are kept under CPU load.

Moreover, the benchmark gives an absolute score after testing. Hence, the process of comparing two processors is straightforward.

Both laptops performed considerably well given the intensity of the benchmark test. In comparison, the XPS 15 performed slightly better than the Macbook Pro.

While the XPS 15 scored 220 points in the single-core aspect of the test, the Macbook Pro scored 145 points.

In the multi-core aspect, the XPS 15 scored 1833 points. Meanwhile, the Macbook Pro was still left below the 1000 score mark – it scored 709 points.

Although XPS 15 is winning so far, it was not long before the Macbook Pro started exercising its own supremacy too. During our HandBrake performance test, the Macbook Pro converted a 4k video to 1080p in just 8 minutes.

This conversion duration was about 2 minutes faster than the XPS 15’s 10 minutes 12 seconds. In case you are wondering, the purpose of the Handbrake benchmark test was to find out how fast both laptops can convert a 4k video to 1080p.

For these two laptops, it looks like the battle can only get more intense. When the XPS 15 wins some aspects, the Macbook comes back stronger.

This has been clearly shown in this processor review and comparison. Even though their performance supersedes and equals each other on certain levels, one evident conclusion is that both laptops are extremely powerful.

Hence, both the XPS 15 and Macbook Pro score a nine in this Dell XPS 15 vs Macbook Pro processor performance comparison.

Dell XPS 15 vs Macbook Pro Memory (RAM) Performance Comparison

In terms of memory, Dell remains consistent in providing series of configuration options for the XPS 15. Meanwhile, Apple doesn’t provide more than one configuration option for the Macbook Pro.

The XPS 15’s DDR4 SDRAM is usually sold in different configuration sizes. You can choose to buy the laptop with either an 8 GB (2 x 4 GB), 16 GB (2 x 8 GB), 32 GB (2 x 16 GB), or 64 GB (2 x 32 GB) sized SDRAM.

On the other hand, the Macbook Pro is only available with 16 GB DDR3L RAM. Also, it has just a single RAM slot unlike the XPS 15 that has 2 RAM slots.

For reference purposes, our XPS 15 review unit features 32 GB RAM.

Without any more time, let’s get right into the thick of our RAM performance review. I kicked off this section of the review and comparison with our real-world RAM performance test.

Basically, our real-world performance test is majorly a multitasking test. How did both laptops fare in this test?

When it comes to multitasking, hats off to both the XPS 15 and Macbook Pro. Running the RAM performance test on these laptops was like watching two master artisans going about their regular operations.

With 30 Google chrome tabs opened, I was still able to hold a group video call on Google meet while I sent messages on Slack. Even the Certified Lover Boy album I was rocking on Spotify couldn’t slow down either one of the two laptops.

Throughout the test, neither the XPS 15 nor Macbook Pro looked like they even broke a sweat. I was amazed by how swiftly I could switch between the browser tabs and the ongoing video call.

What was even more amazing was that I tried to find at least a slight lag in the performance of either one of the two, but I couldn’t. Maybe if I added more workload I could have found one, but that didn’t really seem necessary given how impressive the laptops already were.

Their performance in this test made me look forward to how they were going to handle the benchmark test. I used the PCMark 10 synthetic benchmark to test the laptops.

The PCMark 10 gives a definite measure of the overall system performance of computers when placed under office workload. Ideally, the PCMark 10 has different aspects that help one discover a computer’s performance in certain categories of work like productivity.

In the essential aspect of the PCMark 10 test, the XPS 15 scored an impressive 9808 points. Unfortunately, this score was not high enough to topple the Macbook Pro’s 10609 points.

However, their scores were a bit closer in the productivity aspect of the test. The XPS 15 was able to get close to the Macbook Pro’s 8015 points.

Once again, the battle for supremacy between the two laptops was closely tied. The Macbook Pro beats the XPS 15 in this section with just a slightly higher percentage.

Therefore, the Macbook Pro scores a nine in this Dell XPS 15 vs Macbook Pro memory performance comparison. Meanwhile, the XPS 15 scores an eight.

Dell XPS 15 vs Macbook Pro Storage Options & Performance Comparison

Unlike other aspects where at least either one of the two laptops usually offers more than one configuration option, the case is different in this aspect. Both the XPS 15 and Macbook Pro are usually shipped with one storage configuration.

For the XPS 15, Dell offers a 2 TB PCIe 3 x4 SSD storage. The Macbook Pro, on the other hand, is equipped with 1 TB SSD storage.

You will be delighted to know that both laptops also offer SD card options for external storage. While the XPS 15 comes with a 1x Full-size SD card reader, the Macbook Pro offers an SDXC card slot.

From my first assessment of these laptops’ storage drives, I believe you should be able to get enough capacity for storage. You should also be able to get slightly faster storage speeds and operation since their storage drives are SSDs.

With that being said, let’s take a look at how both laptops performed in our real world and benchmark performance test.

First, let’s consider the benchmark test. As usual, we make use of the CrystalDiskMark synthetic benchmark to test the average read and write speeds of a laptop’s storage drive.

On the CrystalDiskMark test, the XPS 15 surprisingly offered slightly better read and write speeds. The Macbook Pro offered sequential read and write speeds of 1442 MBps and 1558 MBps respectively.

Meanwhile, the XPS 15 averaged a sequential read speed of 1617 MBps and a sequential write speed of 2054 MBps.

On the file transfer test, the XPS 15 ensured to maintain its winning streak. The XPS 15 copied a 4.97 GB multimedia file in just 7 seconds at a transfer rate of 726 megabytes per second.

Meanwhile, the Macbook Pro was just a second slower. It copied the same 4.97 GB in 8 seconds at a transfer speed of 636 megabytes per second.

At this point, I’m completely amazed by how the XPS 15 and Macbook Pro have managed to keep each other on their toes so far. It doesn’t look like either of the two laptops is ready to accept defeat yet.

Regardless, this round goes to the XPS 15. It displayed faster read and write speeds and even though its copy rate was only slightly faster, it deserves to be crowned the winner of this round.

Hence, the XPS 15 scores a nine in this Dell XPS 15 vs Macbook Pro storage performance comparison. Meanwhile, the Macbook Pro scores an eight.

Dell XPS 15 vs Macbook Pro Graphics Card Performance Comparison

With just a look at their graphics card configuration options, it looks like the intensity is still high between these two laptops. Both laptops have two powerful configuration options available for their graphics cards.

In the case of the XPS 15, you can buy the laptop with either an integrated Intel UHD Graphics or a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti graphics card.

Before I proceed, let’s take a quick look at the specs details of these GPU configuration options. With the Intel UHD Graphics card, you will be getting a base GPU frequency of 350 MHz and a boost GPU frequency of 1250 MHz.

If you choose to buy the XPS 15 with the GTX 1650 Ti graphics card, you will be getting a GPU with a 1350 MHz base frequency. This GPU will have the capability to attain a boost frequency of 1485 MHz.

On the other hand, the Macbook Pro could be shipped with an integrated Intel Iris Pro Graphics 5200. You can also buy the laptop with a dedicated AMD Radeon R9 M370X graphics card.

The Intel Iris Pro Graphics 5200 has a base frequency of 200 MHz and a boost frequency of 1300 MHz. Meanwhile, the AMD Radeon R9 graphics card has a base frequency of 775 MHz and a boost frequency of 800 MHz.

For this comparison, our XPS 15 review unit came with the GTX 1650 Ti graphics card. Meanwhile, our Macbook Pro review unit came with the Radeon R9 M370X graphics card.

I started the GPU performance test with the 3DMark 11 benchmark performance test. This 3DMark 11 benchmark helps us to measure the gaming capabilities of a laptop.

To my surprise, the Macbook Pro’s GPU performance in this test was poor in comparison with the XPS 15’s performance. The XPS 15 got an impressive score of 16622 points, completely surpassing the Macbook Pro’s 9690 points.

If you are surprised as well, believe me when I tell you I didn’t see this coming either.

While the XPS 15’s GTX 1650 Ti could be considered a gaming GPU, the Dell XPS 15 isn’t really a gaming laptop. Similarly, the Macbook Pro is strong enough to handle a little bit of gaming but it is definitely not a gaming laptop either.

With the XPS 15, you may not be able to play some of the latest AAA title games at high resolutions. Like the XPS 15, the Macbook Pro may not be powerful enough to play AAA title games at high display resolution.

Hence, you will have to play most AAA title games with medium graphics settings.

To give an articulate description of both laptop’s gaming capabilities, I will give a report of how they both performed when I ran some popular games.

When I played The Witcher 3 at low graphics settings on the XPS 15, the game ran at 209.9 frames per second. Meanwhile, the Macbook Pro offered much lower frame rates of 40.7 frames per second.

I also played Dota 2 Reborn on both laptops. While the XPS 15 offered frame rates of 150 frames per second, the Macbook Pro played the game at 120 frames per second.

Before I rounded off this section of the comparison, I decided to run one last game on both laptops. This game was Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

When I ran this game on the XPS 15, it played the game at 139 frames per second. Meanwhile, the Macbook Pro played the game at 94.2 frames per second.

At the end of this section, it is clear that the XPS 15 offers better graphics performance. It outperformed the Macbook Pro in both the benchmark and real-world performance tests.

As a result, it scores a nine in this Dell XPS 15 vs Macbook Pro graphics card performance comparison. The Macbook Pro, on the other hand, scores an eight.

Dell XPS 15 vs Macbook Pro Battery Life & Performance Comparison

In terms of battery, you can buy the XPS 15 with either a 56WHr or 86Whr battery. Meanwhile, the Macbook Pro is usually equipped with a 99.5 Whr battery.

Based on the results of our battery test, it seems as though this is where the Macbook Pro reclaims the spotlight from the XPS 15. Dell XPS 15 did not perform as well as the Macbook Pro did in our continuous web surfing battery test.

Regardless, I was surprised by both laptops’ incredible battery life despite their immense performance capabilities. On our continuous web surfing test at minimum screen brightness, the XPS lasted 8 hours and 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, the Macbook Pro endured for close to 3 hours longer – it lasted for 10 hours and 57 minutes.

If you equip your XPS 15 with a full HD display, it is possible for you to get a battery life that will equal that of the Macbook Pro or even exceed it.

Since the Macbook Pro lasted longer than the XPS 15 in our battery life test, it scores a nine in this Dell XPS 15 vs Macbook Pro battery life comparison.

Dell XPS 15 vs Macbook Pro: My Final Thoughts

There’s no doubt that Dell has done a good job with the XPS 15. They continue to prove why they deserve the top spot amongst premium Windows 10 laptops.

With little refinements, they have been able to produce a laptop that anyone would be more than willing to acquire. Talk of the laptop’s incredible performance across different essential aspects, its impressively tiny bezels, gorgeous display, and awesome overall body build.

Moreover, the fact that Dell has been able to close down on Apple in terms of performance and design is praise-worthy.

That’s not undermining the Macbook Pro in any way. The Macbook Pro is still deserving of all the praise.

In fact, the Macbook Pro can still be considered a good overall performer. It is a sure bet for creative professionals who want to get jobs done.

Overall, the Macbook Pro is an excellent laptop. However, I would recommend the XPS 15 because it offers more across the different essential performance aspects.

If you’ve not sworn allegiance to the Apple brand, then the XPS 15 would definitely be the one to choose. The only issue is its expensive price.

Hence, based on our comprehensive review and comparison of Dell XPS 15 vs Macbook Pro, we recommend:

However, if you want to save some cash, the Macbook Pro is not a bad choice at all.
