Do Gaming Laptops Really Need Cooling Pads?

Do they work, and do we need cooling pads for our gaming laptops? To counteract this, the majority of us purchase cooling pads. So, when we buy one, we naturally want to take care of it. Let’s take a look. They are referred to as “big-ticket items” and can cost anywhere from $700 to several thousand dollars. Gaming laptops are not inexpensive. Gaming laptops have a tendency to run hot.

Cooling pads assist in keeping laptops cool during both short and long gaming sessions. A cooling pad is a must-have for gaming laptops with powerful CPUs and GPUs, at least in my experience.

In this article, we’ll look at some features that can improve your gaming experience, as well as fan speed and some potential complications from using cooling pads. Choosing the right one for you and your laptop is crucial for a variety of reasons. Continue reading if you require a cooling pad. Cooling pads come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

What are the benefits of using a cooling pad with your gaming laptop?

This is amplified in gaming laptops. You no longer have to be concerned solely with CPU temperatures, as you now have a graphics card that generates heat as well. Any laptop’s components generate heat.

Heat can result in a variety of issues, including hardware damage. It could get so bad that the plastic melts. My headphone jack was one of the issues I had with an overheating laptop. The plastic around my laptop’s jack port began to melt, causing the port to be damaged. My headphones were connected, and the jack was also damaged.

Your CPU, as well as other internal components such as the motherboard and GPU, may be damaged.

When a gaming laptop overheats, some less obvious things can happen:

CPU throttling

We previously published an article on CPU throttling and how to resolve the problem. We’ll only talk about how to lower the temperature on your gaming laptop in that article.

As a result, games will not run to their full potential. CPU throttling is one of the safety features on gaming laptops. A safety feature kicks in when your laptop reaches certain temperatures, and it throttles the performance of your laptop CPU.

Give this article a read for a more in-depth look at CPU throttling and how to avoid it. A gaming laptop cooling pad can help to reduce throttling and keep your laptop running cooler. this articlea good read You’ll learn everything there is to know about CPU throttling and how to fix it.

Do GPUs get throttled

A GPU throttling feature is only found in a small percentage of laptops. GPUs are not throttled in the majority of cases. The problem is that GPUs don’t typically run as hot as CPUs, and the laptop’s designers don’t want to ruin your gaming experience by throttling the CPU.

I can’t tell you whether or not your GPU has the safety feature, but you can check the manufacturer’s website to see if your model has it.

Are cooling pads bad for laptops?

When it comes to laptop cooling pads, this is especially true. Some misconceptions may contain a kernel of truth. Allow me to explain.

Cooling pad misconception

Is this correct? What is the reason for this, they say? A few people have told me that cooling pads are bad for your laptop. They believe it blows dust and dirt into your machine while simultaneously blowing hot air onto your laptop.

Consider it for a moment. If you leave your laptop on a dirty or dusty surface, it will collect dust. That isn’t going to change with a cooling pad. What about blowing hot air on your laptop? What’s the source of that hot air? At least in my experience, I don’t believe this is true.

Why are cooling pads potentially harmful to your laptop?

There is one reason I’ve discovered that cooling pads may be harmful to your laptop, and it has nothing to do with the cooling pads themselves; rather, it has to do with the type of pad you get for your laptop. So, when I said that there is some truth to the myth, I really meant it.

A large portion of that research is focused on cooling and airflow. You may be preventing proper airflow if your cooling pad interferes with or covers the outgoing vents that are designed for airflow. A gaming laptop requires a significant amount of RND to develop. If a cooling pad obstructs your laptop’s airflow, it can be harmful to it.

The hot air would have nowhere to go if they were at the bottom of the laptop. Laptops don’t usually have vents at the bottom, so this is extremely unusual. Consider how much RND it would cost to put a vent at the bottom of a laptop, knowing that laptops sit on flat surfaces.

This costs a lot of money for businesses. RND is an acronym for “research and development.”

Do gaming laptops overheat while gaming?

They can overheat in some cases due to heavy workloads, but we discussed the safety measures in place to prevent overheating. While gaming, gaming laptops do not necessarily “overheat.” Overheating is becoming less of a problem as technology advances.

If you use the right cooling pad and follow the instructions in this article, you should be fine. The more demanding a game is, the harder a laptop must work to run it. Games consume a lot of resources. That is something you should remember at all times. article, you can’t go wrong.

Does gaming damage a laptop?

Because there are several variables to consider, this question is not easy to answer.

Here’s a quick rundown of what you should think about when deciding whether or not gaming will harm your laptop:

  • What is the quality of your laptop?
  • What components are in there?
  • What clock speed is the CPU running at?
  • What games are you playing?

However, pushing the laptop too hard can cause it to break. Gaming, in general, does not harm a laptop; after all, a gaming laptop is designed to play games on.

Let’s take a closer look at this for a moment.

What is the quality of the laptop?

Even if two laptops have identical specifications, one may be built better than the other. What RND went into the cooling and airflow, and how do the two compare in those areas? What you don’t see on the spec sheets very often is the type of thermal compound used on the CPU.

And it’s here that the big-name brands usually come out on top. All of these factors have a significant impact on the laptop’s performance. When a laptop is put together, you usually don’t see what kind of materials are used.

What is a thermal compound, and why does it matter?

The thermal compound, also known as “thermal paste,” is used to improve the heatsink and CPU’s conductivity. It aids in the removal of heat from the CPU. As an example, consider the thermal compound for the CPU.

A better thermal compound will obviously do a better job of this, resulting in lower temperatures for your CPU. The manner in which it is used also has an impact.

What clock speeds does the CPU run at?

When looking at the specifications of a gaming laptop, the clock speeds of the CPU are always listed. The greater this number, the more heat is produced.

What components are in the laptop?

Again, this has a significant impact on the lifespan of your laptop. Unfortunately, the higher the quality of the components, the more heat they will generate.

As a result, it will consume more volts and thus run hotter. An i7, for example, is faster and has more transistors than an i5.

However, there is one caveat to this. The GPU is the same way; the larger it is, the more heat it generates.

Cooling solutions on more expensive laptops with more expensive components are frequently more expensive.

What games are you playing?

So, if you’re playing a big game on ultra or maximum graphics, you might be pushing your laptop too hard. As previously stated, the larger the game and the better the graphics, the more resource-intensive it is.

Fortunately, you’ll know what to do because you’re going to read the article I’ve already linked to after you finish reading this, right?

What is the lifespan of a gaming laptop?

You can extend the life of your gaming laptop if you take care of it. A gaming laptop’s lifespan is entirely dependent on how well it is maintained, but the general rule of thumb is between 3 and 5 years.

However, you will eventually need to replace items such as the thermal compound. You might as well start looking for a new laptop once you have to go that deep into it, in my experience.

This is one of the reasons why people prefer desktop computers: they are easy to upgrade. It’s unavoidable for hardware to become obsolete. If you keep playing the latest games, your laptop will eventually be unable to run them at their full potential. You should also consider the components’ age.

When it comes to gaming laptops, how hot is too hot?

This is a great question, and you should know the answer if you want to keep your gaming laptop in good shape.

While gaming, the CPU of a gaming laptop should not exceed 85 or 90 degrees Celsius. Your CPU will begin to be throttled at this point, and if the throttling does not work, your laptop will overheat.

What cooling pad should you get?

There is such a large selection of cooling pads available that you will be spoiled for choice. A lot of it boils down to personal preference.

They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, each with its own set of features such as fan speeds, RGB lighting, and pass-through ports.

A pass-through port is one that lets you connect a device to your laptop through another device. When you connect your cooling pad to your laptop, it will have USB ports to which you can connect other devices such as your keyboard, which is how a pass-through port works.

The most important thing for you to do is make sure your laptop is the correct size. While a cooling pad that is too large for your laptop may not be a problem, one that is too small for your laptop may cause problems.

These are additional intake vents designed by the manufacturer to accommodate the use of a cooling pad. Check the vents of your laptop, as we discussed earlier in this article. While most laptop vents are found on the sides, they can also be found on the bottom.

This was something I wanted to emphasize in case you thought I was contradicting myself from earlier in the article. Note that any vents you see at the bottom of your laptop are most likely extra intake vents.

When you consider the cost of your gaming laptop, the cooling pad is well worth the money. Fortunately, cooling pads for laptops are not prohibitively expensive.
