Two tests will be carried out. We’ll start by putting the GPU through its paces and taking temperature readings. The laptop will then be placed on the cooling pad and turned on to see if the temperature drops.

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-4710HQ

A temperature of 86.75°C was also reached by the CPU. The GPU reached a maximum temperature of 88°C after the temperatures had stabilized.

Within ten minutes, the GPU’s temperature had dropped. from 88°C to 82°CThat is a 6°C difference.

Because the CPU throttled so quickly, testing it was a little more difficult. We noticed that the CPU tried to keep temperatures around 80°C by lowering clock speeds to achieve that goal.

As a result, the CPU was clocked at 1.8GHz.

Take note of the sudden temperature drop. Thermal throttling began when the temperature reached 80°C.



Using the cooling pad to put the CPU under load


The CPU was able to maintain its temperatures once the cooling pad was turned on, but at a slower clock speed. 2.5 GHz instead of 1.8 GHz. This is a 0.7 GHz performance difference.



With the cooling pad turned on, the CPU throttles at 80%.

Noise levels


It would also be interesting to see how much of a difference the pad would make without the laptop fan interfering. This is due to the fact that the laptop was louder than the pad! I thought it would be fair to measure the noise level of just the cooling pad in order to determine the noise level.

The noise level rose from 40dB to 45dB on average, still in the quiet room range. A newer pad will produce even higher levels of noise. Please remember that this pad is almost two years old.
