What to Consider When Choosing a Laptop Stand

Is It Adjustable?

Set up your laptop so that the top of the screen is at eye level. Neck and back strain can be caused by screens placed below your eye line, especially if you work that way all day. An adjustable laptop stand allows you to customize your workspace to meet your specific needs.

Is It Portable?

You don’t have to worry about portability if you only work in one location. In fact, since those stands are generally more stable and sturdy, you should look for something less portable.

Will you want to move your laptop stand around your house from one room to another? A portable laptop stand is more appropriate if you want to be able to move your work area while remaining comfortable. Do you frequently switch tables between your office, bedroom, and dining room?

Consider the weight of your laptop stand and whether it can fold down to fit in your backpack or suitcase if you plan on taking it out of the house to work in coffee shops or while traveling. Below is a model that is lightweight and suitable for travel.

How Much Does It Cost?

You can probably get away with a budget model if you only need one for a few weeks or think you’ll only use it occasionally. Laptop stands are available in a variety of price points. It’s worth spending more for extra features and durability if you plan on using one frequently.

Does It Meet Your Technical Requirements?

Before you make a decision, make sure the laptop stand will fit your computer’s dimensions. Most stands are designed to hold up to a 15-inch laptop, but double-check the specifications. They’ll also list a maximum weight limit, so make sure your laptop isn’t too heavy.

Some people prefer to use their laptop’s built-in keyboard and trackpad to do their work. Make sturdiness a top priority if this is the case for you. Think about how you’ll use your laptop on the stand. When you press a key on your laptop, the last thing you want is it to bounce around.

If you want to use an external keyboard, the stand’s sturdiness isn’t as important as long as it can hold your laptop securely. If you’re short on desk space or want to use your laptop while standing up, look for a laptop stand with a mouse pad tray (we recommend one below).

If you’re using your laptop as a second monitor, the stand should be adjustable so that the top of the screen lines up with the top of your primary monitor.

  1. Why is the Roost a better travel companion? When folded, the Luye appears to be smaller than the Roost.

    1. I’ve had a Roost stand for about six years, traveling with it in my backpack for months at a time and using it every day at home the rest of the time, and it’s still as good as new. It’s more lightweight and long-lasting.

That’s not to say you couldn’t travel with the Luye – it’s certainly a less expensive option – but it’s not our first choice in that category.
